So You Think You Want To Herd?

Future dates TBA- Spring 2016
In "The Yard" in East Aurora/South Wales
So, you have a herding dog and you think you might want to try competitive herding. Maybe your friends herd and they've told you how much fun it is. Maybe you just want to watch your dog do what it is bred to do. But you don't know where to start or what you might be getting yourself into.
Join us in The Yard for an introduction to what is involved in herding before you get anywhere near livestock. Sue DiBianca will introduce you to the basic principles of herding, the language and the lingo, and what skills your dog should have before you try them on stock.
The class is open to people with all breeds and not just people who want to trial. If you are interested in learning about herding behaviors or just learning something new, you are more than welcome! And the pre-herding training we will discuss in part 2 is beneficial to all dogs.
Intro to Herding Part 1 will introduce you the basic philosophy of herding, how sheep act and react, why herding dogs do what they do, and what is the role of the human in this partnership. Note: no livestock will be used for this class and no dogs should attend Part 1.
Intro to Herding Part 2 will focus on things you can work on at home without livestock to prepare your dog to meet sheep: how to build a working partnership with your dog, reliable recall, polite gate behavior, stop on command, introduction to flanking commands. Dogs are welcome for this part!
If you wish to pursue herding further after these classes, we will help you arrange an instinct test and herding lessons at a facility with livestock.
Sue DiBianca has trained and competed in AKC herding trials since 2006. Her two collies have collected three High In Trial awards.
