Behavior Modification for Reactive Dogs
This program helps you transform your canine social misfit into the courteous and calm dog we all know he can be! Our behavior counselors will teach you how to use your daily routine and some new training techniques to change your dog’s opinion of other dogs and people from bad to good, and give you some of the control and stress-relief you need to enjoy taking your best friend out into the world.
If your dog:
- Doesn’t like other dogs
- Isn’t comfortable when he sees other dogs
- Warms up slowly to strangers
- Doesn’t like certain kinds of people
- Can’t be touched in certain places
- Chases bikes, cars, skateboarders and other fast-moving objects
Every dog gets a little crazy some of the time. But if your dog’s behavior makes you feel embarrassed, unsafe, or out of control, our program can help.
Living with a difficult dog is tough. Simple activities like taking a walk, going for a drive, or going to the vet are traumatic for both dog and owner. Not to mention the build-up of stress that you have to deal with after the fact. Probably not quite what you had in mind when you decided to share your life with a dog!
Whether your dog is so friendly that he’s rude, or so fearful that he can’t stand the sight of another dog, there are ways to teach him to be calm and controlled. It’s not easy, and it’s not quick, but it is effective and long-lasting when done right, using recognized behavior modification methods that are supported by scientifically sound behavior analysis. The improvement of the quality of life for you, your dog, and the community is well worth the time and effort!
The Charm School program involves individual canine behavior counseling and, when the foundation skills are in place, we implement safe, controlled exposures to the trigger(s). One on one, our counselors help identify the reasons your dog does what he does, then teach you and your dog the basic skills you and your dog need to make behavior changes, like owner focus, controlled walking, sits & downs, stays and more. We show you how to apply the scientifically proven techniques of systematic desensitization and counter conditioning so your dog can make a new and more positive association with the things that make him “lose his mind.”
Pet Works does not use punishment to treat reactive dogs. Adding physical or emotional stresses, like yelling or yanking, to situations involving fear and anxiety cannot make your dog feel better, and in fact may even worsen the problem. We have better, more pleasant ways to achieve lasting success, and we are eager to share them with you!
Call Pet Works to start working on changing your dog’s reactive behavior. We look forward to working with you!
