This innovative class structure is a basic obedience class taught in four flexible, progress-at-your-own-rate stages. These classes are not taught in the traditional setting of a structured eight-week class. Each student is encouraged to master the skills of one step before moving up to a more challenging step- the dog and owner stay in the same class for as long as they need. This allows everyone to work at their own pace- whether working slowly and surely on the exercises they are having problems with, or progressing more rapidly up the steps to challenge themselves with ever increasing distractions.
Each of the “steps” has a specific set of exercises taught and information covered. These include basic family dog manners like sit & down, stay, coming when called, polite walking, polite greetings and attention to the owner despite distractions. Because of the flexibility of the program, each week the class may also address other behavior & training issues, keeping class fun, informative and ever-changing!
Each Step is taught continuously on specific nights and times, as scheduled on the training calendar available on our website. Owners have six months from the initial start date to complete eight classes. That means you can miss a week here and there and won’t fall behind- you just return to the Step where you left off.
If you and your dog don’t accomplish all four levels in eight classes, or you would like to return for a refresher at some point in the future, additional four or eight class packages are available.
If you and your dog have already participated in a basic obedience class, we invite you to join us for the Steppin’ Up program. Please contact Pet Works to place your dog in the Step suitable to their training level.
To enroll in class, you must first attend our Information Session. At this class we will answer many of your questions and prepare you for bringing your dog to class. This session is for “humans only,” so please leave your dog home, but do bring your registration form, payment, and proof of vaccinations. Pre-registration is not required, but an RSVP is appreciated.
Our registration form is available by downloading this pdf file, or by contacting us by email or phone to receive one by mail.
Check our Class Calendar, email PetWorksBuffalo@aol.com, or call (716) 837-3647 for the day and times of our Steppin’ Up classes. Information Sessions are held every week, so you can start the program when it’s convenient for you and your family!
The day of the week that each class is held on will switch approximately every two months, so if one night isn’t good for you, you will be able to participate in each step before long!
Plan on attending one class per week- although skipping a week or two is certainly fine, working consistently with your dog is necessary to accomplish your training goals.
